JPEG files are a compressed file format that saves room on a memory card by saving most – but not all– of the details in a photograph. The alternative is to shoot in RAW format – RAW files are uncompressed, which allows more created freedom in the editing process, but they take up much more space on the memory card. Most digital cameras have degrees of compression range from Standard (which has the most detail loss) to Superfine (the least detail loss).
